Designing for biodiversity

Any regeneration at Tipner West will need to measure and prove an increase in biodiversity as a result of the development using DEFRA’s biodiversity metric. This metric assesses habitats and an area’s value to wildlife.

Plans for the site should design for biodiversity – this means ensuring the height and position of buildings don’t impact the flight path of birds, that semi-natural habitats and vegetative landscaping for wildlife are included, and opportunities for innovative features like living roofs are explored.

There should also be protected habitat areas where wildlife is undisturbed by people and pets at key times of the year.
